CAREER
Always a player with immense potential, Popyrin eventually made his biggest breakthrough in 2024, when he powered his way to a first Masters 1000 title in Montreal, defeating fellow UTS player Andrey Rublev in the final. This was the biggest and most recent of his three ATP titles, having also won in Umag and Singapore in 2023 and 2021 respectively.
Popyrin followed up his Montreal triumph with a stunning victory over world No 2 Novak Djokovic at the US Open the following month, en route to an excellent fourth-round finish in New York – his best a Grand Slam.
But Popyrin has long been a big-time player, earning three victories over ATP top-5 players and 11 wins against players in the top 10. At the Japan Open in 2023, Popyrin recorded the 13th fastest serve of all time, hitting a delivery of 243 km/h – a weapon that has led him up to 23rd in the ATP rankings, currently his career-best ranking.
STYLE AND PERSONALITY
As mentioned above, Popyrin’s greatest weapon is his powerful serve, backed up by an aggressive, attacking brand of tennis built around his forehand.
Most comfortable at the baseline, making use of his powerful groundstrokes, Popyrin is also adept at the all-court game, with a decent quality of volley and quick, incisive footspeed.
Popyrin has a cool head, and rarely gets flustered on court, something which was fundamental to him seeing out the biggest wins of his career, both in the Montreal final and in his defeat of Djokovic at the US Open.
